Parry Yachts; cover, cost and conditions
Parry Yachts is Mike Parry Yachts of Lymington on the south coast of England, across the Solent from the Isle of Wight. The yard is remembered for one boat: the Gem, design number 18 from the Humphreys office, drawn in 1977. Brian Carvill commissioned it and Parry built it in Lymington. The Gem followed the Micro Cup rule, a class for small cabin boats set up in 1977 by the French magazine Bateaux. At the 1979 Micro Cup in La Grande Motte on the Mediterranean it took the trophy for production boats. Yet it was meant just as much as a lively family boat with simple, camping style berths for a night aboard.
Our model records list one design from Parry Yachts, the GEM micro 18 sailing boat at 5.5 metres, with build years from 1977 to 1985. The name gives away its origins: micro for the class, 18 for the length in feet. Under the hull sits a lifting keel that drops from about 23 centimetres to one metre of draught, so the boat sits low on its trailer and still sails like a keelboat. The entry does not reach recent build years. The moulds later went to Australia, where an active class association still keeps the boats racing.
A Gem spends much of its life on a trailer, and the lifting keel is the heart of the boat. When buying one, raise and lower the keel fully, look at the lifting gear and the keel box for cracks or weeping, and check the fastenings where the box meets the hull. Small racing boats are often sailed hard, so the rudder stock and the chainplates deserve attention. The trailer itself matters too: rollers, bearings and lights should be sound before the next trip to a regatta.
