Pearson Yacht Sales; cover, cost and conditions
Pearson Yachts was started in 1956 by two cousins, Clinton and Everett Pearson, who built glassfibre dinghies in a garage in Seekonk, Massachusetts, before moving to Rhode Island. In January 1959 they showed the Triton 28, drawn by Carl Alberg, at the New York Boat Show, an early production cruiser in glassfibre, and the company counts among the first builders of fibreglass sailing boats. Grumman Allied Industries took a controlling interest in 1961 and held it until 1991. For decades William Shaw was chief designer; among his boats are the Pearson 26, 30, 35, 323, 365 and 424. The company went bankrupt in 1991, and no new Pearson yachts have been built since then.
Our model records list 19 designs from the build years 1965 to 1987: 18 sailing yachts and, as the only open boat, the Pearson Ensign at 6.9 metres. The earliest are the Coaster 30 and the Pearson 35, both from 1965, with the Pearson 35 listed until 1979. The core of the range is cruising yachts between 8.5 and 11.3 metres, such as the Pearson 28, 30, 32, 323, 10, 36, 37 and 365, along with the Pearson-Flyer 30. Five designs exceed twelve metres: the Pearson 39, 40, 419, 424 and the Pearson 530 at 16.3 metres, the largest on the list. The 424 and the 530 are also the last entries, both running to 1987. No line reaches the most recent build years.
Every Pearson today is a boat with decades behind it, so the condition of the individual hull matters far more than the model name. Cored decks of this period can take on water around stanchion bases and deck fittings, and a moisture meter in the hands of a surveyor is well worth it. Chainplates, keel bolts and the original wiring deserve a careful look, and many boats have had their engines replaced, which should be documented. Sails and standing rigging are often much younger than the hull. The Ensign, the only open boat in the list, is a keelboat for day sailing and club racing, and its fittings and mast step take a lot of handling over the years.

For the Pearson 424, Pearson 530, Pearson 36 by Pearson Yacht Sales and further series:
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:
a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,
and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
For the Pearson Ensign by Pearson Yacht Sales series:
On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides.
A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
