Pegiva Boats; cover, cost and conditions
Pegiva Boats is a small boutique builder on Australia's Gold Coast with a clear theme: motorboats that look as if they had come straight out of the fifties and sixties. Underneath the period styling sits a modern build. Hull and superstructure are moulded in glassfibre composite, and Brazilian mahogany is laid into the decks and trim to give the classic runabout look. The Retro Sun adds a convertible roof that folds flush out of sight and is driven by an inboard diesel. From a distance a Pegiva passes for a restored timber launch; up close the composite hull gives it away.
Our model records list three designs, all motorboats. The Super Squalo Classic and the Super Squalo Retro carry build years from 2003 to 2010, and the Retro Sun runs from 2004 to 2014. Sizes barely differ: the Super Squalo Classic is 7.1 metres long, the other two measure 7.5 metres each. None of the three lines reaches into the most recent build years, so every Pegiva on the water today changes hands second hand. It is a narrow range built around one size of boat and one style rather than a full catalogue from dinghy to yacht.
Varnished mahogany is the part that needs the most attention. Sun and salt lift the finish, so the deck inlays want regular sanding and fresh coats, and any dark or soft patches around fittings deserve a closer look. The folding roof mechanism should open and close smoothly, with its seals intact. These are boats for fast runs, swimming stops and lunch at anchor, and many are kept on a road trailer. When buying second hand, check the engine hours of the inboard diesel, the state of the upholstery and whether the timber on deck is original or has already been renewed.
