PEHN Bootsbau is based in Straß im Attergau in Upper Austria, a short way inland from the Attersee. By its own account the company has been making electric boats for more than fifty years, a series of its own that is used mostly on Alpine lakes. Hire operators buy them as well as private owners, and the yard also builds to individual order and handles repairs and servicing. The hulls are glassfibre composite, laid up by hand on the eVario 530 and by infusion on the eVario 660. The open eVario 530 is easy to recognise with its seating in the bow and a sunbed aft.

The Pehn eVario 530 has the longest run, from 2009, and at 5.3 metres it is also the shortest boat. The Pehn eVario 660 follows from 2015 and, at 6.6 metres, is the largest model, a small cabin boat with berths for two. In between sits the Pehn 550 Elektro at 5.5 metres, listed from 2016. The whole range spans just 1.3 metres and stays entirely with electric drive, from open day boat to compact cabin cruiser.
With an electric boat the batteries are the heart of the matter. Their age, the number of charge cycles and the state of the charger say more about a used PEHN than the age of the hull. Cable runs, connectors and the motor controller should be dry and free of corrosion, and on the eVario 660 the hydraulic steering deserves a check for leaks. Many boats of this kind have spent years in hire fleets, so look closely at the gelcoat along the rubbing strake and at the upholstery. On a lake the season is short and gentle, and dry winter storage helps the batteries last.
