Peter Bruun; cover, cost and conditions

Peter Bruun is a Danish yacht designer whose name stands behind a whole family of canoe-sterned boats. During the seventies he drew a series of sailing boats of different sizes, each named after a whale: Spækhugger is the killer whale, Marsvin the harbour porpoise, Grinde the pilot whale and Kaskelot the sperm whale. The Spækhugger came first, drawn in 1969 for cruising and racing and built by Flipper Scow. The Grinde was built with Flipper Scow at first and later in Bruun's own yard, with some batches of hulls and decks supplied by LM. Look for the pointed stern, a hand-laid glassfibre hull and a rudder hung behind a skeg. Bruun still races himself.

Our model records list four designs, two classed as sailing yachts and two as sailing boats. The Spækhugger starts earliest, in 1968, runs until 1990 and measures 7.44 metres. The Kaskelot follows from 1970 and, at 10.3 metres, is the largest of the family, listed until 1989. The Grinde measures 8.2 metres and spans 1971 to 2001, longer than any other line. The Marsvin is the smallest at 6.75 metres and appears from 1975 to 1989. None of the four reaches the most recent build years. Taken together, the family runs from 6.8 to 10.3 metres, from a lively keelboat to a cruiser for longer passages.

These are boats built to be sailed hard, and a used one should be looked at with that in mind. The Grinde has a balsa-cored deck, so check around chainplates, stanchions and winches for soft spots or damp. The skeg and its rudder bearing take real loads, and the single-spreader masthead rig deserves new standing rigging if the wire is old. The hulls themselves were hand laid, so look for old repairs and check the keel bolts. The Spækhugger was drawn with racing in mind, and a race-used boat may carry newer sails than its age suggests. The Grinde has a reputation for strong winds and has crossed oceans.

What this means for the cover

For the Grinde by Peter Bruun series the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely.

An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.

For the Spækhugger, Kaskelot and Marsvin by Peter Bruun series there is no list price left.

That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it,

and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.

For the Grinde, Kaskelot by Peter Bruun series:

On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:

a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,

and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.

For the Spækhugger, Marsvin by Peter Bruun series:

On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides.

A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
