The double name Peterborough / Alcan points to two Canadian roots. Peterborough Boats was an Ontario builder of glassfibre and wooden boats, taken over in 1965 by Aluminum Boats & Canoes of Princeville, Québec, the firm known today as Princecraft. Alcan, the Aluminum Company of Canada, moved into boatbuilding in the seventies and in 1973 combined Canadian Boat Manufacturing and Springbok into Alcan Marine Products. Under the Peterborough/Alcan name, small glassfibre bowriders came out of Princeville. The glassfibre division closed in 1982, and Alcan left boatbuilding altogether in 1985. The models are easy to spot by the V in the name followed by a three-digit number.

Our model records list four motorboats, all from the seventies. The Fleetwood V 164, Le Marquis V 177 and Gypsy V 240 start in 1970, with the Grand Prix V 190 following in 1971. The Fleetwood ends in 1977, the Grand Prix in 1978, and the Gypsy and Le Marquis run until 1979; no later build years appear. The number in each name is roughly the length in feet times ten: the Fleetwood V 164 measures 5 metres, the Le Marquis V 177 5.35 metres, the Grand Prix V 190 5.8 metres, and the Gypsy V 240 is the largest at 7.32 metres. Three of the four stay under six metres and sit comfortably on a road trailer.

A fifty-year-old runabout is a project worth doing properly. In many glassfibre boats of that era the transom and stringers were cored or backed with wood, so press around the engine mounting and listen for hollow or soft spots. Check the floor for flex and the hull for crazing in the gelcoat. Original wiring, fuel lines and steering cables are usually due for replacement, and the trailer needs as much attention as the boat: bearings, lights and rollers. A sound, well restored example of one of these bowriders makes a charming day boat for lakes and sheltered coasts.
