Petticrows is a boatyard at Burnham-on-Crouch in Essex, on the River Crouch, and the yard can be traced back to the 1930s. Today it is known above all for building Dragons, the classic keelboat drawn by the Norwegian Johan Anker. For many years Dragon building there was led by the Dane Poul-Richard Høj-Jensen, twice an Olympic gold medallist in the Soling. The yard also developed two motorboats on a 21-foot Nimbus hull, finished with teak decks and styled like a classic gentleman's launch: an open boat with a steering console and a sports cruiser with a small cabin.
Our model records list three designs: one sailing yacht and two motorboats. The Dragon is the largest boat at 8.9 metres and, with build years from 1927, also the oldest; it is the only line that reaches into the most recent build years. The two motorboats belong to a short chapter. The Liberty 25 Convertible is listed from 1999 to 2006 and measures 7.21 metres, and the Liberty 22 Commuter follows from 2000 to 2006 at 6.83 metres. So a short list puts a keelboat with almost a century of class history next to two launches that were built for only a few years.
A Dragon is raced hard and measured closely, so a used boat needs a careful look at the keel attachment, the mast step and the rudder bearings. Sails and running rigging wear quickly at regatta level and are often renewed as a set. Most boats travel to events on a road trailer, so check its bearings, lights and support pads too. The Liberty launches are a different matter: their teak decks need the seams checked, and the inboard engine and its drive want a documented service history. As both Liberty models ended in 2006, every one on the market today is a used boat.
