Worth knowing
Philip and Son; cover, cost and conditions
Philip and Son was the shipyard of Kingswear, the village on the east bank of the Dart facing Dartmouth in Devon. George Philip founded it in 1858, and for 141 years it turned out yachts, tugs, coastal tankers, ferries, excursion boats and lightships. An advertisement from 1908 lists steam and sailing yachts next to launches and pinnaces for the Admiralty. British Steel, the yacht Chay Blyth sailed round the world in 1970 and 1971, came from the same slipways. Shipbuilding stopped in October 1999 and the site is now a marina. For cruising sailors, Maurice Griffiths drew the hull of the Atlantic Clipper around 1968, and the yard added its own deck and coachroof with a galleon style stern.
Our model records hold a single design from Philip and Son: the Atlantic Clipper sailing yacht at 10.97 metres, eleven metres in round figures. The listed build years run from 1971 to 1977, while the yachting press puts the start of sales at around 1968, with some hulls and decks sold for owners to fit out themselves. Below the waterline there is a long, shallow keel with a centreboard and a keel hung rudder. Above it sit a deep centre cockpit, a generous aft cabin and a ketch rig. No line reaches recent build years, as the yard closed long ago. The hull moulds later passed to Barbican Yachts of Plymouth, who used them for the Barbican 33.
Every Atlantic Clipper is now around fifty years old, and the home completed boats differ from one another in joinery, wiring and engine installation. A buyer does well to look at the centreboard case and its pivot, the rudder hangings on the long keel and the chainplates of both masts. The ketch rig splits the sail area into small, easily handled pieces, which suits a crew of two on long passages. The protected centre cockpit and big galley make the boat a natural liveaboard, so many have spent years in one harbour before going back to sea.
