Porali Marin AB is a Swedish yard whose name is tied to the designer Bruno Boström. From 1974 it built the Boström 37, a glassfibre cruising yacht with a round-bilge hull. She carries a masthead sloop rig, a fin keel and a rudder hung on a skeg. With a displacement of about eight tonnes, roughly 3.5 tonnes of it ballast, and close to two metres of draft, she is drawn for open water. The easiest way to spot a Boström is the large centre cockpit: the saloon and forecabin lie ahead of it, a separate aft cabin behind, a layout meant for long passages with a family aboard.
Our model records hold two designs, both sailing yachts. The Boström 37 is listed at 11.05 metres with build years from 1974 to 1988. The Boström 372 joins in 1981, measures 11.1 metres and also ends in 1988, so the two lines ran side by side for eight seasons. Neither reaches into the most recent build years. Anyone buying a Boström today is buying second-hand, and even the youngest boats are now close to forty years old.
On a yacht of this age the condition of the hull matters more than the year on the papers. Have a surveyor check the glassfibre for osmosis and the keel bolts and skeg for any sign of movement. The standing rigging on a forty-year-old boat may well have been replaced, and it is worth asking when. Centre-cockpit boats hide their engine and tanks under the cockpit sole, so access and the condition of hoses and shaft seals deserve a look. A well-kept Boström with a sound rig is a capable boat for long coastal cruising and offshore passages.
