Worth knowing
Pouvreau; cover, cost and conditions
Pouvreau was a boatyard at Vix in the Vendée, not far from La Rochelle on France's Atlantic coast. As work grew, the yard moved its production in 1972 from its old site to the edge of the town. Its best known model, the Romanée, is an aluminium cruising yacht drawn by Philippe Harlé. The regional heritage inventory of the Pays de la Loire credits that design with the yard's success. Most models carry place and wine names such as Romanée, Tokay, Mareuil or Méridien; only two are named after their length.
Our model records list eight Pouvreau designs, all sailing yachts. Build years run from 1967 for the Tigre to 1992 for the Rivage 39. In between come the Romanée from 1971, the Tokay from 1974, the Mareuil and Méridien from 1975 and the Pouvreau 11,3 and 12,2, named after their length, from 1977 and 1978. Most lines end in the mid eighties. Lengths range from the 10.2 metre Romanée to the 14.3 metre Méridien; two models sit below eleven metres, five between 11.3 and 12.2 metres, and the Méridien stands alone above that.
Every Pouvreau is now more than thirty years old, and many have been refitted more than once. An aluminium hull such as the Romanée's needs watching for galvanic corrosion: check anodes every season, keep stray current away from the berth and avoid copper based antifouling. Ashore, a sound cradle under the long keel and a dry winter for the rig keep these blue water cruisers ready for the next passage.

For the Rivage 39, Romanee, Meridien by Pouvreau and further series:
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:
a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,
and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
