Precision Boat Works; cover, cost and conditions
Precision Boat Works is a family business from Florida. The brothers Richard and Bill Porter started out in a small shed in 1978, and their first boat was a 20-foot flush-deck sloop with a full keel. The yard began in Palmetto and later moved to Sarasota. For four decades it built fibreglass monohulls meant for family sailing. Boatbuilding stopped in 2018, and since then the company has only made parts for boats already afloat. From 1984 the naval architect Jim Taylor of Marblehead, Massachusetts, drew its designs, beginning with the Precision 18.
Our model records hold a single design from the yard: the Precision 23, a sailing boat of 7.05 metres listed for build years 1982 to 1998. The entry does not run into recent build years. Jim Taylor was its designer, as he was for the later Precision range. Other lines such as the Precision 18 do not appear in our records, so every figure on this page refers to this one model. Any Precision 23 in our data is now more than a quarter of a century old, which makes its history as important as its specification.
On a boat of this age the usual checks matter more than the badge. Look at the deck around stanchion bases and chainplates for soft spots, inspect the keel attachment and the rudder fittings, and ask how old the standing rigging and the sails are. Fine crazing in the gelcoat of a hull from the eighties is common and mostly cosmetic, while blisters below the waterline deserve a closer look. Many owners keep boats of this size on a road trailer, so its brakes, bearings and tyres belong on the checklist too. A folder of receipts and a recent survey make any purchase far easier to judge.
