Primaboot is a German yard at Westerkappeln in the northern Münsterland. It built mainly sailing dinghies, alongside small motorboats and catamarans. The range was aimed at clubs, sailing schools and families: the Seggerling as a racing dinghy, the Kobold as a stable youth dinghy, the Mephisto as a handy cruising dinghy. You recognise the boats by the simple robust construction, the open cockpits without lining and the compact dimensions; many models are built so that one person can launch them.
Our model records list 47 Primaboot models: 21 sailing boats, 14 motorboats, four sailing yachts, four cabin sailing catamarans and four open sailing catamarans. Recorded build years run from 1964 to 2007. Forty seven series are recorded. The names are short and German: Seggerling, Kobold, Mephisto, Dingo, Feuervogel, Hobby, Krümel, Mandau, Pille, Polyp, Windy, Amor, Asgard, Bully and Adonis, plus the catamarans Du Cat, Seecat, Solocat and Becat and the model B 1. Lengths run from 1.7 to 9.6 metres, half the models between 4.2 and 6.4 metres.
A dinghy leads a crowded life. It sails where other dinghies sail, in club water and in training, with boats close together and beginners at the helm, which is a different exposure from a yacht on a mooring. The boat itself is simple and cheap to put right; what happens to the boat next to it is the part worth thinking about.
