Worth knowing
Prior, R. J.& Son (Burnham) Ltd.; cover, cost and conditions
R. J. Prior & Son is an English boatbuilder, and its company name places it in Burnham. The yard is known for the Coaster 33, a traditional long-keeled motor-sailer that the designer Alan F. Hill drew for Prior and that appeared in the late sixties. The hull is GRP, while a heavy teak interior sets the tone below. A Coaster is easy to recognise by its centre cockpit under an open wheelhouse, with three double cabins beneath. Several rigs were offered, though most boats are ketches. A Mk2 version followed in 1975, with less joinery and more internal mouldings.
Our model records hold one design: the Coaster 33, a sailing yacht of ten metres listed for build years 1971 to 1999. The entry does not reach recent build years. The yachting press gives an overall length of 9.98 metres, a draught of 1.22 metres and a 50 hp engine that does much of the work to windward. It also notes a production run of nearly twenty years for the Mk2, which fits the long span in our data. No other models from the yard appear in our records, so every figure here belongs to this one line.
A motor-sailer leans heavily on its engine, so the service history, the engine hours and the state of the mounts, shaft and stern gland come first. Teak joinery is a pleasure to live with, but water marks around the wheelhouse windows and deck fittings often point to old leaks that need sealing. A ketch has two masts, which means twice the standing rigging and chainplates to inspect. The long keel lets the boat sit steadily and track well; check the keel bolts or encapsulation and the rudder bearings. A boat from the seventies with a known history and recent survey is far easier to judge.
