Purbrook; cover, cost and conditions
Purbrook is the name of an English boatbuilding business run by Charles Purbrook until Hugh Rossiter took it over in 1951. Rossiter carried on building wooden boats to the firm's own designs, and in 1962 he drew a 27-foot yacht of his own, the Pintail. Until 1970 she was built in wood; then growing demand for glassfibre boats led to the hulls being moulded in GRP. Timber remained an important part of the boat, and that blend of glassfibre and wood is what marks a Pintail out. Builder directories list the yard today as Rossiter Yachts Ltd.
Our model records hold one design: the Pintail sailing yacht at 8.37 metres, listed for build years 1967 to 1977. The entry does not reach recent build years, and even the youngest boat in this range is close to fifty years old. The period spans both building methods, the wooden boats of the late sixties and the GRP hulls from 1970 onwards. The records do not say which method a given boat follows; that only becomes clear from the boat itself and its papers. No other designs appear under the Purbrook name in our data.
Age is the first thing to weigh on a Pintail. A wooden hull wants a careful look at planking, fastenings and the area around the keel bolts, while a GRP hull from the seventies is more often a question of osmosis and of the joins between the moulding and the woodwork. Trim, hatches and coamings in timber need regular varnish or oil to stay sound. Check how old the standing rigging is and what state the engine bearers are in. A survey by someone who knows boats of this period is time and effort well spent before any purchase.

Series by Purbrook, build years and cover
Pintail is a sailing yacht from Purbrook, built from 1967 to 1977.
For the Pintail by Purbrook series there is no list price left.
That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it,
and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
For the Pintail by Purbrook series:
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:
a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,
and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
