Queen Long Marine Co Ltd; cover, cost and conditions
Queen Long Marine builds the Hylas yachts in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. In the early eighties company head Joseph Huang worked with Sparkman & Stephens on a 47-foot sailing yacht, the Stevens 47, which counts as the first model of what became the brand. Two German Frers designs followed in 1984, and Huang named the line Hylas, after a youth from Greek legend who sailed with Heracles. Bill Dixon and the New Zealand office of Salthouse later drew boats for the yard as well. The signature is a glassfibre sailing yacht with a centre cockpit. In 1990 Huang reworked older models with Dick Jachney, giving the 46 and 49 a stepped sugar scoop stern, and both went on to sail in Caribbean charter fleets.
Our model records list 13 designs: eleven sailing yachts and two motor yachts. The oldest entry is the S&S 47, built from 1978 to 1986, followed by the Hylas 46 from 1984. The Hylas 49 is listed from 1995 into the most recent build years, and the Hylas 54 and Hylas 54 Raised Saloon, both 16.5 metres, joined in the late nineties. The new H series starts in 2019 with the H46, H48, H57, H60, H63 and the H70, which at 21.01 metres is the largest design. The M44 and M49 motor yachts followed in 2020. Nine designs reach the most recent build years, and the smallest yacht is the M44 at 13.51 metres.
A centre cockpit yacht of this size is made for long passages, with a large aft owner's cabin and a protected cockpit away from the spray. On a used Hylas, have the rig surveyed and check the age of standing rigging and sails, the state of the teak deck if fitted, and the chainplates. Boats that spent years in Caribbean charter have often seen hard use, so the logbooks and refit history deserve attention. Tankage, watermaker, generator and battery banks matter on a boat meant for blue water. Between the S&S 47 of 1978 and an H70 lie four decades of design, so compare layouts and systems carefully before deciding.

As the Hylas 49, Hylas H46, Hylas H48 by Queen Long Marine Co Ltd and 6 more series are still in
production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable.
Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
For the Hylas 46, Hylas 54 and Hylas 54 Raised Saloon by Queen Long Marine Co Ltd series the
market value and the replacement cost often differ widely.
An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
For the S&S 47 by Queen Long Marine Co Ltd series there is no list price left.
That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it,
and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
For the Hylas 49, Hylas H46, Hylas H48 by Queen Long Marine Co Ltd and further series:
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:
a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,
and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
For the Hylas M44, Hylas M49 by Queen Long Marine Co Ltd series:
On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value.
Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
