Conch boats trace their roots to Key West, where local fishing guides worked with a naval architect on an offshore hull built for angling. The first boats came from Edey & Duff, a Massachusetts sailboat builder. In 2005 R & R Boatworks (Conch 27) took over the moulds, and the boats have since been built in Stuart, Florida. Under the new owner the line grew from a plain Florida Keys charter platform into a sportfisher with a more careful finish. A Conch is known for its thick, heavy glassfibre hull and for a ride tuned to economy and a soft, dry passage rather than outright speed. The open centre console layout leaves room to fish all the way round.

Our model records list four Conch designs, three motorboats and one motor yacht, and all four reach the most recent build years. The Conch 27 and Conch 33 are recorded from 2004, the Conch 30 and Conch 47 from 2014. The Conch 27 measures 8.22 metres, the Conch 30 9.41 metres and the Conch 33 10.71 metres. At 14.05 metres the Conch 47 is in a different league and the only one listed as a motor yacht. The number in each name is roughly the length in feet. Older Conch boats from the Edey & Duff years do not appear as a separate line in our records, which start in 2004.

A heavy offshore hull is built to take a beating, yet a used fishing boat has usually worked hard. Check the fish boxes, live wells and their plumbing for leaks, and look at the console and hardtop mounts for cracks. Engine hours and service records on the outboards matter more than the build year. Fishing electronics age quickly, so find out what is original and what has been replaced. Salt water gets everywhere, so wiring, pumps and through-hulls deserve a close look. A boat that was rinsed after every trip and stored on a lift or in a rack will show it.
