Ranger Yachts; cover, cost and conditions

Ranger Yachts was an American yard set up by Jack Jensen in 1970. Jensen already ran Cal Boats on the West Coast, and the new name had two jobs: to reach buyers on the East Coast and to give him a way to bring in the designer Gary Mull. Mull went on to draw nearly every Ranger, which is why the range reads like the work of one hand. Production began in Costa Mesa, California, and moved to Tampa, Florida, in 1981. Ownership changed early: Bangor Punta bought the company in 1973, and Lear Siegler took it over together with Bangor Punta in 1984. By 1987 the yard was gone, and most of the moulds were destroyed on Lear Siegler's orders, so no Ranger has been built since.

Our model records hold eight Ranger designs. Two are smaller sailing boats, the Ranger 22 at 6.9 metres and the Ranger 23 at 7 metres; the other six are sailing yachts. Above them sit the Ranger 26 at 8 metres, the 29 at 8.8, the 32 at 9.9 and the 33 at 10.1 metres. The Ranger 37 and the Ranger 1-Ton share the top length of 11.3 metres, and the name of the 1-Ton points to the One Ton racing class. Most designs start between 1970 and 1974, while the Ranger 29 appears in the records with build years from 1960. The last entries end in 1982 with the Ranger 22 and the Ranger 32. None reach recent build years.

Every Ranger afloat today is at least four decades old, so condition matters far more than the name on the transom. On a used boat, look at the chainplates and the deck around them, at the keel bolts and the joint between keel and hull, and at moisture in the deck if it is cored. Standing rigging of unknown age should be replaced before the first long trip. A boat that has been raced may come with tired sails and well worn deck hardware. With the factory and most of the moulds gone, many parts have to be made or adapted rather than ordered. A well kept Mull design still sails sweetly and repays careful, regular maintenance.

What this means for the cover

For the Ranger 22, Ranger 32, Ranger 29 by Ranger Yachts and 5 more series there is no list price

left.

That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it,

and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.

For the Ranger 22, Ranger 23 by Ranger Yachts series:

On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides.

A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.

For the Ranger 32, Ranger 29, Ranger 37 by Ranger Yachts and further series:

On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:

a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,

and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
