Salmeri; cover, cost and conditions
Salmeri is an Italian yard from Falcone on the north coast of Sicily, not far from Messina. It builds small fibreglass motorboats: open day boats without berths, fishing boats and a few boats with a small cabin. The model names point to the Mediterranean and its myths: the Greek islands of Chios and Syros, Vesuvius, Olympia, Midas and Calypso. Suffixes describe the layout, Open for the open boat, Sundeck for the version with a sunbathing area and WA for the walkaround with side decks.
Our model records hold ten Salmeri motorboats. The Olimpia 22 appears in three versions, Open, Sundeck and WA, and the Mida as 555 and 650, alongside the Syros 190, Chios 170, Vesuvio 430, Calipso and Cabin Fisher. The Syros 190 starts in 2012 and runs to 2022, the longest span in the list. The Cabin Fisher runs from 2013 to 2019 and the other eight 2015 to 2020. Lengths go from the 4.35 metre Vesuvio 430 to the three 7 metre Olimpia 22 models, with four boats between 5.2 and 5.66 metres, the Calipso at 6.2 and the Mida 650 at 6.5 metres.
Almost every Salmeri fits on a road trailer, which makes it a boat for summer trips south as much as for a home lake. Open hulls collect rain and sand, so a canvas top and a working bilge pump matter if the boat stays in the water. Upholstery and canvas last longer when they spend the winter indoors, and the outboard wants a fresh water flush after every day on the sea.
