Scheepswerf de Breedendam is a Dutch yard in Leeuwarden with roots going back to 1976. Since 1982 it has turned classic ship's lifeboats into leisure craft: open, motorised sloops with careful joinery, made for day trips on canals, lakes and rivers. In the 1990s the yard added its MTB line, styled after the motor torpedo boats of the Second World War. So a Breedendam usually looks like one of two things, a traditional lifeboat or a long, low wartime fast launch.
Our model records hold 17 Breedendam designs, nine motorboats and eight motor yachts. The earliest build year is 2002, and eight lines run into the latest model years. The Lifeboat 20, 24 and 28 measure 5.95 to 8.25 metres and date from 2011. Six models carry the MTB label, from the 8.9 metre MTB 28 to the two fourzero versions, Cabrio and Wheelhouse, at 13.37 metres each; the Threezero Classic and Threezero Sport add two 9.4 metre boats. The Breedendam 20, 690, 700, 2000, 825 Kajuit and the Vechtsloep belong to the 2002 to 2012 period. Lengths run from the 5.5 metre Vechtsloep to the 13.37 metre MTB fourzero.
The sloops and lifeboats are canal and lake boats: easy to lift out, often moved by road and usually stored ashore over winter. Varnished wood and upholstery appreciate a tarpaulin, a dry shed and regular care. The MTB yachts are marina boats with more power, used for longer runs on large lakes and along sheltered coasts, and their engines deserve a proper winter service.
