Skeeter Products; cover, cost and conditions

Skeeter Products builds fishing boats in Kilgore, East Texas, and its story starts in 1948 in Shreveport, Louisiana. There Holmes Thurmond built a 13-foot boat of moulded marine plywood for the weedy backwaters of the region. Its long, pointed nose reminded people of a mosquito, a skeeter in Southern speech, and the name stuck. In the fifties the company moved over to glassfibre. By way of Marshall and Longview it settled in Kilgore during the seventies, passed through several owners including Stemco and Coleman, and has belonged to Yamaha since 1996. The range still follows the idea of that first boat: a craft made for fishing, first for bass in fresh water and later for the coast as well.

Our model records list one design, the Skeeter SX 176, a motorboat of 5.3 metres built from 1996 to 2002. It therefore comes from exactly the years after the Yamaha takeover, when Skeeter reorganised its range. The trade press names the FX, ZX and iClass bass boats of that era, the WX and MX deep-V boats, and the SX line as bay boats for shallow coastal water. At 5.3 metres the SX 176 sits in the handy size that a car and trailer can still move comfortably. None of the brand's lines in our records reaches into the most recent build years, so every boat listed is now well over twenty years old and has usually had several owners.

A bay boat from the late nineties is a working tool, and it shows its history. Look closely at the transom, where an outboard of decent weight has been hanging for decades; soft spots or cracks around the bolts point to water in the core. Check the floor for flex, the livewell plumbing for leaks and the wiring for corrosion, since saltwater spray reaches every connector. Trailer, bearings and winch deserve the same attention as the boat, because these hulls spend more time on the road than on a mooring. A tidy SX 176 with a well kept engine remains a practical boat for estuaries, lagoons and flats.
