Steiger Craft builds boats in Bellport on Long Island, New York, right on the Great South Bay. Al Steiger started the yard on land his family has held since the late 1800s. Around 1974 he built his first work boats for the bay's clammers and scallopers, plywood garveys and sharpies, and around 1978 the yard moved to fibreglass. Deep V hulls for offshore runs came later. That heritage still shapes the boats: fishing boats built by anglers for anglers, refined model by model.
Our records list 11 models, all motorboats, all from build year 2018 and all recorded up to the latest build years. Three carry the CC tag, the 21, 23 and 255 CC, and six belong to the DV range: the 21, 23, 255, 28 and 31 DV Miami and the 23 DV Block Island. The 21 Peconic and the 25 Modified V complete the list. Lengths run from 6.4 metres for the three 21 models to 9.44 metres for the 31 DV Miami, and the number in each name is roughly the length in feet.
These are fishing boats first. Fish boxes, rod holders and washdown pumps get hard use and need a check after every trip. The smaller models up to about eight metres travel well on a trailer, while the 28 and 31 are more at home in a slip. Rinsing the deck and engine with fresh water after salt runs keeps the hardware lasting.
