Stelco; cover, cost and conditions
Stelco is short for the Steam and Electric Launch Company, a maker of steam and electric launches. A Rightboat sale listing says the Deltic was designed for the company by Andrew Wolstenholme, and describes the Deltic 21 as an electric cuddy with a large cockpit and about six knots on tap. These are boats for quiet hours on rivers and lakes. Their names carry the Stelco label with a number, which in the Classic range gives the length in feet, as in the Classic 16, 21 and 31, or a name such as Deltic or Mystic.
Our records list six Stelco models, five motorboats and one motor yacht. Five lines begin in 1991: the Classic 16, Classic 21, Classic 31, Deltic and Mystic, with the Stelco 23 joining in 1994. Final years fall between 1998 and 2000, the Deltic running to 1999 and the Stelco 23 to 2000. Lengths run from 4.88 metres for the Classic 16 to 9.45 metres for the Classic 31, the only motor yacht. In between sit the Mystic at 5.9 metres, the Classic 21 and Deltic at 6.4 metres each and the Stelco 23 at 6.8 metres.
An electric launch rewards a calm style of boating: a picnic upriver, a slow lap of the lake, a mooring under the trees. The batteries are the heart of the boat, so charging habits, a dry battery bay and a winter top up matter more than anything else. Hulls from the nineties should be checked around the stern gear and deck fittings, and a berth with shore power makes life much easier.
