Worth knowing

Supermarine Motor Yachts Ltd.; cover, cost and conditions

Supermarine Motor Yachts builds fast sportsboats by hand and to order at Northshore Shipyard in Chichester. The story runs back to Fairey Marine. For the Spearfish 32 the company took on the last iteration of the original Fairey Spearfish moulds, keeping the deep-vee hull that Fairey's designer Alan Burnard refined over more than 25 years and that once served both leisure owners and military crews. Deck and superstructure are new, drawn by the in-house team together with yacht designer Stephen Jones. What marks out a Supermarine is that pairing of a proven racing hull with a classic profile, a tall windscreen and modern helm electronics. Published top speeds sit beyond 40 knots.

Our model records list three designs, all classed as motorboats and all starting in 2019: the Spearfish 32, the Swordfish 36 and the Swordfish 42. Every one of them reaches into the most recent build years, so the whole range is in current production. The Spearfish 32 and Swordfish 36 are almost the same length at 10.95 and 10.97 metres, while the Swordfish 42 is the largest at 13.1 metres. The Spearfish is laid out as a two-berth weekender, open or with a hard top. The Swordfish models offer four berths and a composite hard top reinforced with carbon. The 42 sits on an all-new hull based on Burnard's Swordfish 36, with a pair of Volvo Penta D6-440 engines beneath the aft sun loungers.

Boats that run at this pace reward careful ownership. Deep-vee hulls driven hard in a seaway put real loads into the structure, so a look at the bottom, the stringers and the engine beds belongs in every lift-out. Sterndrives or shafts, engine mounts and cooling systems want servicing on schedule, and the hours logged tell much of a boat's story. Since the range only began in 2019, a second-hand Supermarine will be young, which makes the build specification, the service records and any warranty transfer the main things to check. The composite hard top and its fixings, the screen and the handrails also deserve attention after a few seasons of fast running.
