Supreme Boats is based in Merced, California, and has been building towboats since 1968: family boats for waterskiing, wakeboarding, tubing and wakesurfing, with room for a crowd. The brand now belongs to the Florida-based Correct Craft group. What sets these boats apart is ballast. Tanks in the hull are flooded until the stern sits low and throws up a wave big enough to surf without a rope. On the S238 that ballast works over a deep-V hull and is filled through the QuickFill system, with an optional QuickSurf system to shape the surf wave. The ZS models owe the Z in their name to a sheer line drawn like a Z, and they run on a tapered-V hull that narrows towards the transom so the stern settles deeper. Power comes from inboard engines.
Our model records list eight Supreme designs, all motorboats between 6.1 and 7.3 metres. Six belong to the S series: S21, S 202, S 211, S 224, S 226 and S 238. The other two form the ZS series, the ZS 212 at 6.5 metres and the ZS 232 at 7.1 metres. The S 238 is the longest boat at 7.25 metres, while the S21 and S 211 are the shortest at 6.13 metres each. A towboat works harder than most runabouts: lots of starts, a full load of people and heavy water ballast for hours at a time. On a used Supreme, check the ballast pumps, tanks and hoses for leaks and the bilge for standing water. Engine hours matter more than age here, and the service record of the inboard, including impeller and cooling, tells you how it has been treated. Look over the tower and its mounting points, the swim platform and the upholstery, which takes a beating from wet riders and sun. On the trailer, inspect tyres, bearings and brakes. A boat that has run in fresh water and spent its winters indoors usually shows it.
