Van Vuuren Maritieme Techniek; cover, cost and conditions

Van Vuuren Maritieme Techniek is based in Maurik in the Dutch province of Gelderland and both designed and built the Dutch Tender, a compact motorboat in the manner of a traditional barkas. One Dutch Tender 32 described by a Dutch broker dates from 2005, with the hull built in Doesburg. It is made of five-millimetre steel with a multi-chine form, a self-draining cockpit, wide side decks and stainless bollards. What people notice first is the very low air draft, which opens up small waterways as well as large ones and lets the boat slip under fixed bridges that stop taller craft. Draft is just under one metre. The Dutch magazine Waterkampioen tested the boat and gave it a positive verdict.

Our model records list three designs, all entered as motorboats and all from the same family. The Dutch Tender 32' starts with build year 2018 and measures 9.93 metres. A year later the Dutch Tender 32' Classic at 10.05 metres and the Dutch Tender 34' Open at 10.3 metres join it. All three run into the most recent build years, so the range is still in production. The lengths are close together: less than 40 centimetres separate the smallest from the largest. The suffixes Classic and Open mark versions rather than a step in size. Since a Dutch Tender 32 was already built in 2005, the design is clearly older than the entries in our records.

A steel tender like this is easy to live with, but steel still asks for attention. Check the anodes every season, keep the bilge dry and touch up any paint damage on the hull before rust takes hold. On a used boat a thickness survey of the plates is worth the modest effort, and the engine hours and service history tell you a lot. Where folding canopies or screens are fitted to keep the air draft low, look at hinges, frames and stitching. These boats suit rivers, lakes and canals in the Netherlands and beyond, including the French waterways, where a draft below one metre is a real advantage.
