Vator Oy; cover, cost and conditions
Vator Oy is a Finnish company with a long boatbuilding past. It was founded in 1938 at Degerö near Helsinki, today's Laajasalo. After the war it built work and rescue boats, in the 1950s wooden sailing boats went to the United States, and the 1960s were the era of mahogany racing yachts and motor cruisers. In the 1970s fibreglass motorboats became the main business, before the company moved into selling engines and equipment. The Vator boats in our data come from the fibreglass years: small, sturdy motorboats whose number gives roughly the length in feet.
Our records list six Vator models: five motorboats and one sailing boat. The oldest is the Day Sailer, a 5.15 metre sailing boat recorded from 1962 to 1977. The motorboats start in 1970: the Vator 12 at 3.55 metres until 1977, the Vator 14 at 4.25 metres until 1978, the Vator 15 at 4.35 metres until 1977 and the Vator 17 at 5.03 metres until 1978. Last comes the Vator 15GL at 4.35 metres, built from 1982 to 1988.
These little boats suit lakes, archipelagos and short coastal hops, and they tow behind an ordinary car. Many survive in second or third hands, so check the transom, the floor and old gelcoat for cracks, renew fuel lines and wiring, and keep the boat under a tarpaulin through the northern winter.
