Walter Thoma set up on his own in 1972 in Weesen on Lake Walen, starting with a boat service business. In 1977 it became a boatyard, building sailing boats first and later sport fishing boats and motorboats. When the space in Weesen grew too small, the firm moved in 1994 to a new building in Mühlehorn, and Thoma Boote GmbH was founded at the same time. After 47 years Walter Thoma handed the yard over to Andreas Nötzli in October 2019. The boats are easy to place by their type numbers from 500 to 680 and by suffixes such as Fisher, Cabin and Sunny, which tell you whether you are looking at an open angling boat, a boat with a cuddy or a day boat for swimming and sunbathing.

Our model records list 31 designs: 30 motorboats and one sailing boat, the Fan 22 at 6.65 metres, which with its 1973 start is also the earliest entry. Seventeen designs carry the Thoma name, from the Thoma 500 Fisher to the Thoma 680 Cabin, including the Thoma R 670 Elektro and the Thoma Revival. Three boats of the T series, the T 650 Combi, T 670 Combi and T 750, appear between 1984 and 1995, alongside ten entries named Speer between 1976 and 1993. The Thoma 600 Fisher runs the longest, from 1996 to 2013, and none of the lines reaches the most recent build years. Every boat stays under eight metres, 13 even under six. The smallest is the Speer 230 at 2.3 metres, the largest the T 750 at 7.5 metres.

Most Thoma boats in our records left the yard decades ago, so condition counts for everything. On an older lake boat the transom and the engine mounts take the most strain and deserve a close look, as do the steering cables and the fuel lines. Boats kept on a mooring all summer should be checked for blistering below the waterline, and wooden trim and upholstery show quickly how carefully a boat has been stored over the winter. The R 670 Elektro adds one more question: the age and state of the battery bank, which decides how far the boat still goes on a charge. Most of these boats are light enough for a trailer, so the trailer itself belongs in any inspection.
