Elizabethan Yachts Ltd.; cover, cost and conditions
Our records list the Elizabethan 23 under the name Elizabethan Yachts Ltd. It is a British sailing yacht from a range that began at Peter Webster Ltd. in Lymington, which has its own brand page with us. According to yachtsnet, Webster sold the moulds of the Elizabethans shortly after launching the Elizabethan 33 in 1974 to G. Drummond-Bayne Marine in Southampton, where the boats continued to be built until about 1985. The Elizabethan 23 was one of the models in the range built in larger numbers than the 33. It was designed by Webster and David Thomas, and Yachting Monthly tested it in May 1969. It is easy to recognise by its long overhangs, which give it the look of a scaled down offshore cruiser racer, and by its lifting keel.
Our model records show the Elizabethan 23 at 7.01 metres with build years from 1966 to 1986. The earliest years fall before the published design year of 1969 and should be read with care; for an individual boat the year in its papers is what counts. According to Yachting Monthly, it measures 6.6 metres on the waterline and 2.2 metres in beam and displaces around 1.7 tonnes. The lifting keel gives a draught of between 0.8 and 1.5 metres, so the boat can reach shallow waters. Below deck there are four berths, and the Mark I of the mid seventies gained 150 millimetres of headroom, bringing it to 1.5 metres.
Boats were supplied with either an inboard diesel or a petrol outboard, and some hulls were fitted out by their owners, so no two Elizabethan 23s are quite alike. When looking at one, it is worth checking the lifting keel mechanism, its lifting gear and the keel box for wear and leaks, along with the rudder, the chainplates and the standing rigging. Owner fitted interiors vary widely in quality and deserve a careful inspection. In a decent breeze the boat is described as very stiff and quite fast, which makes a well kept example a pleasant yacht for coastal cruising and club racing alike.
