Febris Marine; cover, cost and conditions

Febris Marine was based on Canvey Island in the Thames estuary and is tied to one boat above all: the Lysander. Percy Blandford, an author and designer of small craft, drew her in 1963 for home building in marine plywood over simple frames. From the early seventies Febris Marine built a glassfibre version, and according to the owners' association the last one left the shed around 1979. The first moulded hulls were straight copies of the wooden boat with steel bilge keels, while later boats had a full deck and cabin moulding and moulded keels. A Lysander is easy to spot: twin fixed bilge keels, a small cabin and a simple main and jib rig.

Our model records list two designs, both entered as sailing boats and both with build years from 1975 to 1982: the Lysander 17 at 5.2 metres and the Stormbird 15 at 4.5 metres. Neither reaches into recent build years. For the Lysander the sources give a beam of 1.98 metres, a draught of just under 0.69 metres and a weight of about 360 kilograms, with 8.4 square metres of mainsail and 2.8 of jib. Beyond our own data we found no source on the Stormbird 15. Our build years run past the end date named by the owners' association, and we simply note that here.

Twin bilge keels let a Lysander sit upright when the tide goes out, which makes her a natural for drying moorings and shallow creeks. That habit puts load on the keel joints, so on a used boat look for cracks or weeping around the keel roots, and on early hulls with steel keels check the bolts and the steel for rust. The original rig may be gunter or Bermudan, and the spars and fittings are worth a careful look. At around 360 kilograms the boat is light enough to trail, so the condition of the road trailer counts as much as the hull. An active owners' association is a good source of advice and spares.
