Worth knowing
Ferdinand Uecker; cover, cost and conditions
The name Ferdinand Uecker stands for Uecker Yacht- und Bootsbau in Rendsburg, the town on the Kiel Canal. The yard is known for its Fahrensmann yachts. A sales brochure for the Fahrensmann 36 describes a steel boat of 10.70 by 3.48 metres with a box keel and a draft of only 1.20 metres, a Bukh diesel and good headroom below. Fahrensmann is an old northern German word for a seasoned sailor, and the number after it gives the length in feet, more or less.
Our model records list six designs: five Fahrensmann sizes and the Vertue II. The Fahrensmann 23 at 6.93 metres is recorded as a sailing boat, the 27 at 8.32, the 30 at 9.25, the 32 at 9.65 and the 36 at 10.7 metres as sailing yachts. The Vertue II measures 7.9 metres. Build years run from 1975, when the 32 and 36 begin, to 1993, the last year of the Vertue II. The 30 is listed from 1978 to 1992 and the 32 ends as early as 1982.
These are boats with thirty to fifty seasons behind them. A steel hull lives or dies by its paint, so owners check for rust around fittings and on the keel at every haul-out. The shallow box keel makes drying harbours and shoal waters part of the cruising ground, and a steady diesel and a dry cabin make the boats well suited to long summer trips along the coast.
