Ferry Boatyard; cover, cost and conditions
Ferry Boatyard is a boatbuilder in Cheshire, England, and its name travels mostly with one design: the Winkle Brig. Eric Bergqvist drew it as a small gaff-rigged cruiser, and the yard built it in GRP. The encyclopaedia entry gives a production run from 1985 to 2002. The look is that of an old working boat shrunk to pocket size: gaff mainsail, jib and a little topsail above a hull only 4.9 metres long on deck. Instead of a fixed keel the boat carries twin retractable bilge boards, so it can be sailed in very shallow water.
Our model records hold a single design from the yard, the Winkle Brig as a sailing boat of 6.1 metres overall. The listed build years run from 1987 to 1995, a narrower window than the full production period. Nothing reaches the most recent build years, so every boat on the market today is roughly three decades old or more. The gap between overall and deck length comes from the bowsprit and the spars. Sail area is about 16 square metres across three sails, displacement around 650 kilograms and beam just over two metres. With the boards down the draft is about 76 centimetres, with them raised roughly 36. The boat is laid out for two people.
A gaffer of this size asks for regular but simple care. Check the jaws of the gaff and the throat and peak halyards every season, and look at the topsail yard and its lashings. The bilge boards live in cases that collect mud and weed, so flush them and inspect the pivots and lifting lines. When buying used, look at the hull around the board slots and at the chainplates, and ask whether the GRP has been checked for osmosis. Many owners keep their Winkle Brig on a road trailer, so the trailer, its rollers and the lighting board deserve the same attention as the boat.
