Worth knowing
Fiberbade; cover, cost and conditions
The name Fiberbade stands for I.N. Fiberbåde, a small Danish yard in Haderslev in southern Jutland, run by boatbuilder Ib Hauge Nielsen and no longer in business. It built the Banner sailing yachts, Scandinavian fibreglass boats from the years when plastic replaced timber: compact cruisers and quick racers for the Baltic and the Danish belts. The name Banner with a number close to the length in feet, and the Racer suffix on the sportier versions, identify them.
Our model records hold ten Fiberbade entries: eight sailing yachts, one sailing boat and one motor yacht. The range runs from the 7.04 metre Banner 23 Racer to the 12.35 metre Banner 41. In between sit the 7.8 metre Banner 26, the Banner 28 as both sailing and motor yacht plus the Banner 28 Racer at 8.5 metres each, the 9 metre Banner 30, the 9.15 metre Banner 1/2-Ton, the 10.02 metre Banner 33 and the 10.25 metre Banner 34. Build years run from 1970 for the motor yacht Banner 28 to 2007 for the Banner 28 Racer, which spans 1977 to 2007. Most models ended between 1988 and 2000.
Banners are decades old now, and many still race at club level or take families along the Baltic coast. Older glassfibre hulls reward a moisture check below the waterline, and original rigging and chainplates are worth inspecting. Their modest size makes a winter ashore on a cradle easy to arrange.

For the Banner 28 Racer by Fiberbade series the market value and the replacement cost often differ
widely.
An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
For the Banner 41, Banner 30, Banner 1/2-Ton by Fiberbade and 5 more series there is no list price
left.
That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it,
and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
For the Banner 28 Racer, Banner 41, Banner 30 by Fiberbade and further series:
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:
a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,
and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
For the Banner 23 Racer by Fiberbade series:
On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides.
A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
For the Banner 28 by Fiberbade series:
On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value.
Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
