Fibocon B.V.; cover, cost and conditions

Fibocon B.V. built polyester sailing boats and yachts in Kampen on the IJssel. Its most familiar design is the Sturgeon 28, drawn by Kok of Muiden, a familiar name in Dutch yacht design. The hull has an S shaped section intended to give calm, steady behaviour under sail, and the boat was laid out for inland as well as coastal waters. With an air draft of about eleven metres it slips under a good many bridges, which matters on Dutch canals. Fibocon boats belong to the early glassfibre era and are still sailed on lakes, inland waters and along the coast.

Our model records list eight designs from 1965 to 1983, three sailing boats and five sailing yachts. The oldest entries are the Dutch Dandy and the Seven Seas, both from 1965. The Dutch Dandy, Sturgeon and Sturgeon 22 all measure around 6.7 metres and are listed as sailing boats. Among the yachts are the Sturgeon 28 at 8.4 metres, the F 31 Selecta at 9.23 metres, the Vagabond 32 and Vagabond 35 at just under ten metres, and the Seven Seas, the largest design at 11.28 metres. The Seven Seas and F 31 Selecta run to 1981, the Sturgeon 22 and Sturgeon 28 to 1983. Nothing later is listed, so every Fibocon is now more than forty years old.

Early polyester hulls were often laid up thick and have aged well, but forty years bring their own checklist. Look for osmosis on the underwater hull, soft spots in a balsa or plywood cored deck around stanchions and chainplates, and weeping at the keel bolts. Standing rigging of unknown age should be replaced as a matter of course. Many of these boats have had new engines, wiring and sails over the years, so a folder of receipts says more than the build year. On inland boats, check the mast tabernacle and lowering gear, since bridges make them work hard.
