Fibreglass Yachts; cover, cost and conditions

Fibreglass Yachts is the name under which the Cape Barren Goose, a 37 foot cutter, was built at Mona Vale near Sydney. The sales records credit master shipwright Geoff Baker as the builder, one of the people who pioneered glassfibre boatbuilding in Australia during the seventies and eighties. The design is by Professor Peter Joubert, whose drawing board also produced the Currawong 31, the Brolga 33 and the Magpie 34. The plans of the Cape Barren Goose are held in the collection of the Australian National Maritime Museum. On the water she shows a cutter rig with two headsails, a deep centre cockpit and a generous aft cabin.

Our model records list one design, the Cape Barren Goose as a sailing yacht of 11.27 metres, rounded to 11.3. The build years run from 1972 to 1988, a production span of some sixteen years. Nothing reaches the most recent build years, and the youngest hulls are now close to forty years old. According to the sales listings the yacht has a beam of 3.65 metres and draws 2.01 metres on a lead keel. She was drawn as a fast and comfortable offshore cruiser with a safe cockpit amidships and a private cabin aft, a boat meant for passages rather than afternoon sails.

A boat of this age and purpose rewards a careful survey. Look at the keel bolts and the joint between lead and hull, and at the chainplates of the cutter rig, which carry both forestays. Standing rigging that is more than about ten years old is usually due for renewal. On a centre-cockpit yacht the engine sits under the cockpit floor, so check access, mounts and the stern gland. Deck fittings on older GRP hulls can leak into the core or the cabin lining. Many Cape Barren Geese have made long passages, so a log of past voyages and refits tells a buyer a great deal.

What this means for the cover

For the Cape Barren Goose by Fibreglass Yachts series there is no list price left.

That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it,

and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.

For the Cape Barren Goose by Fibreglass Yachts series:

On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:

a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,

and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
