Flug- und Fahrzeugwerke; cover, cost and conditions
FFA stands for Flug- und Fahrzeugwerke Altenrhein, a works on the Swiss shore of Lake Constance. The site goes back to Claude Dornier, who founded the Dornier works at Altenrhein in 1924 because aircraft building had been banned in Germany under the Treaty of Versailles. Claudio Caroni took the company over in 1948 and renamed it FFA the following year. Aircraft and railway carriages were its main business, and in the 1960s it also produced the Diamant series of sailplanes. Alongside these it built sailing boats with glassfibre hulls. The St. Gallen state archive holds photographs of an FFA 20 under sail in 1972 and of sinking tests at the Altenrhein boathouse.
Our model records list two designs, both entered as sailing boats. The FFA 20 measures 6.03 metres and is listed for build years 1967 to 1984. The larger FFA 25 comes to 7.5 metres and appears from 1973 to 1984. Both lines end in the same year and neither reaches into more recent build years. The numbers in the names match the length in feet: 6.03 metres is just under 20 feet and 7.5 metres just under 25. Anyone sailing or buying an FFA today is dealing with a boat that has at least four decades behind it.
A glassfibre hull of this age is usually sound, but the details deserve attention. Check the hull to keel joint and the keel bolts, look for osmosis blisters below the waterline and for soft spots in the deck around fittings, where water may have crept into the laminate over the years. Standing rigging of unknown age should be replaced rather than trusted. Many of these boats spent their lives on Swiss and German lakes, so a survey should also look at the trailer or cradle the boat sits on. A sound FFA remains a simple, honest boat for day sailing and club racing.
