Worth knowing
George Mottle; cover, cost and conditions
George Mottle built a sailing yacht in New South Wales, on the east coast of Australia, that still carries his name. It was designed by Joe Adams, an Australian naval architect known for fast boats that behave well at sea; Graham Radford, later a partner at Adams Yacht Designs, also worked on the design. The Mottle 33 is a glassfibre cruiser racer with a fin keel, spade rudder and masthead sloop rig. Mottle built her from the seventies until about 1983. The moulds and rights then went to Naut Yachts, where the boat continued as the Naut 33. A Mottle 33 is recognisable by its slim, light hull and generous sail plan, a boat that races at the club and cruises along the coast.
Our model records hold exactly one design, the Mottle 33, entered as a sailing yacht of 9.99 metres. It is listed with build years from 1972 to 1991, a span that includes years when the moulds were already with another builder. The line does not reach into recent build years, and no other design appears under the Mottle name. At just under ten metres the Mottle 33 is a typical yacht for two to four people, big enough for coastal passages and handy enough for a small crew. The boat was built in Australia, and that is where the line has its roots. Every one of them is at least three decades old and has often passed through several owners.
An older fin keel yacht needs a close look below the waterline. Check the keel bolts and the joint between keel and hull, and look at the spade rudder bearings and stock for play. A masthead rig of this age may still carry original standing rigging, which should be replaced if its history is unknown. Inside, look for signs of water at the chainplates and the deck hardware. Boats that raced hard in club fleets may have newer sails but tired winches. A survey before purchase pays off on a yacht of this age.
