German Boats; cover, cost and conditions

German Boats, usually written Germanboats, is a small German builder registered in Bielefeld that develops and builds sailing boats. It is led by Andreas Budde, himself a sailor from the microtonner scene. He wanted a boat for a quick sail after work, a little more modern than the racing micros built to strict class rules. The result was the XP-19, a sporty daysailer that one person can handle alone. Its striking chines, steep stem, low freeboard of just under 70 centimetres and very discreet deckhouse make it easy to pick out. The hull is a little longer than a microtonner. It is built as a solid polyester laminate, while the deck is a foam cored sandwich with an inner moulding under the coachroof and side decks.

Our model records hold exactly one design, the XP-19, entered as a sailing boat of six metres. It is listed with build years from 2017 to 2022 and does not reach into the most recent years in our records. No second design, no motor version and no larger sister appears. At six metres the XP-19 belongs to the small cabin boats that still sit comfortably on a road trailer. The little cabin offers usable space for gear and a break, but most of the boat is open cockpit. A lifting keel changes the draught between 0.35 and 1.25 metres, so the XP-19 can reach shallow bays and slipways. Every boat is young and comes from a short production run.

A lifting keel is the part that needs the most attention. Check the lifting mechanism, the keel box and the bearing surfaces for wear, and make sure the keel locks firmly in both positions. The chined hull and low freeboard mean the deck stays close to the water, so look at hatches and deck fittings for leaks. As a single handed boat, the XP-19 depends on well led lines and working clutches. When buying second hand, ask for the trailer papers, the age of the sails and any records of keel servicing.
