Gesten Boats; cover, cost and conditions
Mascot boats come from Denmark. Brokers name Gesten Boats as the builder, and for the Mascot 28 the Gesten yard is mentioned explicitly, while the Mascot 910 appears under the name Mascot Boats A/S. The range was drawn by the designer Palle Mortensen. These are motorsailers with the emphasis on sailing, boats where the engine is more than a way into harbour. A motorsailer of this kind usually pairs a hull that sails decently with a fixed wheelhouse or deck saloon, so the helm stays dry in rain and cold. That blend of cruising yacht and motorboat is what makes a Mascot easy to recognise.
Our model records list seven designs: six sailing yachts and the Mascot 25 at 7.5 metres, which is filed as a sailing boat. The longest run belongs to the Mascot 28, recorded from 1977 to 2011, more than three decades. The other types date from the eighties and nineties: the Mascot 25 from 1981 to 1989, the Mascot 33 from 1982 to 1997, the Mascot 910 from 1983 to 1996, the Mascot 1110 from 1984 to 1998, the Mascot 35 DS from 1986 to 1996 and the Mascot 43 DS from 1989 to 1996. At 13.05 metres the 43 DS is the largest boat. No design reaches the most recent build years.
Any Mascot on the market today is a used boat, and many are several decades old. A survey should look closely at the engine, since a motorsailer relies on it far more than a pure sailing yacht does: hours, cooling system, exhaust and engine mounts all matter. Wheelhouse windows and their seals are worth checking for leaks, as water finding its way into the cabin causes slow damage. Standing rigging older than about ten to fifteen years is usually due for renewal. How the boat spent its winters and the condition of the hull below the waterline also say a lot.

For the Mascot 28, Mascot 1110, Mascot 33 by Gesten Boats and further series:
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:
a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,
and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
For the Mascot 25 by Gesten Boats series:
On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides.
A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
