The SuperyachtNews company directory lists the firm for exterior design, interior design and naval architecture, which makes it a designer rather than a yard. Our records file a set of large sailing and motor yachts under its name. The model names are the giveaway: Gem runs through both generations, joined by Uxmal, Ashanti and Giemme, which sounds like the Italian way of saying the letters G and M. On the sailing yachts the number roughly gives the length in feet, so the Uxmal 100 is 30.7 metres long, while on the Gem motor yachts from 1991 it is close to the length in metres.
We record 16 models, ten sailing yachts and six motor yachts. Seven belong to an early group built from 1980 to 1988, the Giemme 65 until 1989: the Ashanti 70, Gem 57, Gem 85, Giemme 65 and the Uxmal 62, 74 and 100. Nine form the Gem line of 1991 to 2005, five motor yachts (Gem 19, 20, 38, 42 and 46) and four sailing yachts named after their rig: Gem 610 Sloop, Gem 705 Sloop, Gem 880 Schooner and Gem 940 Ketch. Lengths run from 17.83 metres (Gem 57) to 45.7 metres (Gem 46).
Yachts of this size stay on a quay or a mooring and are lifted out by crane when they come ashore. A schooner or ketch rig brings extra spars, standing rigging and sails to inspect, and older one-off builds reward a survey before each season. Professional crew or a regular yard team is usual for the larger Gem motor yachts, which spend long periods berthed between passages.
