Glen-L Marine Designs is not a boatyard but a design office. Glen L. Witt founded it in 1953 at Bellflower, California, and it has sold plans, patterns, frame kits and matching hardware kits ever since to people who build their own boat. The catalogue runs to several hundred designs, from a pram of barely two and a half metres to cabin cruisers beyond thirteen. You do not identify a Glen-L boat by a builder's plate but by the design: crisp chines, straight plywood panels and named drawings that can still be obtained decades later.
Our model records list 81 Glen-L designs: 25 sailing boats, 21 sailing yachts, 17 motor yachts, 16 motorboats and two sailing catamarans. Recorded build years run from 1979 to 2005. Sixty series are recorded and, unlike a production yard, they carry names rather than numbers: Bravado, Cruisette, Escapade, Francis Drake, Amigo, Aurora, Bandido, Catalina Express and Double Eagle stand beside numbered designs such as the Glen-L 17 TS, 19 TS, 21 TS and Glen-L 30. Lengths run from 2.4 to 16.8 metres.
An amateur built boat carries no yard serial number and no type plate, so its papers are the build file: the plans, receipts for the materials, photographs of the work in progress and, where one exists, a survey. The build year of such a boat is the year it was finished, not the year the design was drawn, and the two can be decades apart on a set of plans that stayed in print.
