Gouteron; cover, cost and conditions
Gouteron is a French yard from La Baule on the Atlantic coast. In the late 1960s it launched the Ghibli, a small family cruiser that the yard designed itself and built in a short series. Construction was in solid polyester laminate; on the Ghibli hull and keel form a single piece, and the rig is a fractional sloop. The range also included the Simoun 445 and Simoun 485 dinghies and a model called Vents d'Ouest. The largest boat is the Chergui, a masthead sloop drawn by Groupe Finot. The names give the family away: Ghibli, Chergui and Simoun are all winds from North Africa and the Sahara.
Our model records list three designs, two sailing boats and one sailing yacht. The Ghibli at 6.6 metres runs from 1967 to 1981, the longest span of the three. The Simoun 445 measures 4.4 metres and appears from 1973 to 1980. The Chergui is the largest at 9.16 metres and is listed from 1970 to 1981, while the published source gives 1973 to 1978 for its build. No line goes beyond 1981, so every boat is now well over forty years old.
Boats from the seventies call for a patient look before buying. On a solid laminate hull, tap around the keel joint and the chainplates and look for crazing in the gelcoat where the deck flexes. Standing rigging of unknown age should be replaced, and old wooden or plywood parts inside often hide soft spots. The Ghibli was known as a wet boat in a seaway, so check hatches and deck fittings for leaks. A Simoun dinghy mostly needs sound buoyancy, a straight centreboard and a trailer in good order.

For the Chergui by Gouteron series:
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:
a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,
and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
For the Ghibli, Simoun 445 by Gouteron series:
On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides.
A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
