Greenboats is based in Bremen, where it has been making natural fibre composites for more than a decade, both for boats and for industrial use. The company aims at sandwich structures built entirely from renewable and recycled raw materials. Instead of glass mats it lays up spun and woven flax, the foam core is recycled PET, and everything is bonded with an epoxy that is partly plant based. The deck is laid in cork, recycled from the offcuts of wine cork production.

It appears from build year 2019 and runs into the most recent build years, so it is still being built. The lines come from the design office Judel/Vrolijk & Co, and the look is deliberately classic. According to the trade press, around 80 per cent of the boat is made from natural or recycled materials, and at roughly 1,200 kilograms it is lighter than a comparable glassfibre build. It is meant for a full day on the water with up to three people aboard rather than for nights spent on board.
A flax laminate needs much the same care as any good composite boat, with a few extra points. Keep the clear coat intact, because bare natural fibre does not like standing water. Check the cork deck for wear at the cockpit and around the fittings, and clean it gently rather than with harsh chemicals. As a light daysailer the FLAX27 often travels on a road trailer, so the trailer, its rollers and the lifting points deserve a look. On a used example, ask about the boat's storage over winter and look closely at any repairs, which should have been done in matching materials.
