GT Yachts Ltd.; cover, cost and conditions

GT Yachts is a British company set up in 2011 by Conrad Cockburn, a chartered engineer and naval architect. Its first boat, the GT35, was drawn by Stephen Jones, built by Windboats Marine at Wroxham and launched at Fox's Marina in Ipswich in 2014. It opened a planned range of yachts between 35 and 50 feet. The boats are performance cruisers in glassfibre, meant to sail briskly while still working for a couple or a small crew on passage. The yard is young, and so are its boats: none of them dates from before 2014.

Our model records list five designs, all sailing yachts. The GT30, GT35 and GT40 start with build year 2014, and the GT47 and GT325 joined in 2018. The GT30 ends in our list in 2021 and the GT40 in 2022, while the GT35, GT47 and GT325 run into the most recent build years. Lengths range from 9.14 metres for the GT30 to 11.99 metres for the GT40. The GT35 measures 10.7 metres, and the GT47 and GT325 are recorded at 9.89 and 9.97 metres. The whole range therefore sits between just over nine and just under twelve metres, with three of the five yachts under ten metres.

A performance cruiser earns its name through a stiff hull, an efficient rig and good sails, so these are the parts to look at first on a used GT. Check the keel attachment and the floors around the keel bolts, especially if the boat has raced or touched bottom. Running rigging, halyard sheaves and winches work hard on a boat that is sailed actively. Sails lose their shape long before they tear, and a sailmaker's view of the main and headsail is worth having. Some owners race at club level, so ask about the race history and any repairs that followed it. Because the boats are recent, the original build documents and the specification sheet from the yard should still be easy to obtain.
