Gunfleet Marine is a British yard from the east coast of England, set up in 2010 by Richard Matthews. Decades earlier Matthews had founded Oyster Yachts and later sold it; with Gunfleet he returned to building cruising yachts in Britain. Tony Castro drew the hulls and designed a family of cruisers for the yard, up to the Gunfleet 74. The first boat was the Gunfleet 43, unveiled in 2011. The yachts are recognisable by a raised helm position with a clear view forward, plenty of light and air below and generous stowage both below and on deck.
Our model records hold one design from the yard, the Gunfleet 43, a sailing yacht of 13.4 metres. It is listed with build years from 2008 to 2015, so the line does not reach into the most recent build years. The yachting press describes her as a bluewater cruiser for long voyages, rigged as a sloop and drawing 2.1 metres in the version tested. A fairly modest ratio of sail area to displacement shows that weight was set aside for gear, tanks and stores. Larger sisters such as the Gunfleet 58 and the 74 do not appear in our records so far.
A Gunfleet 43 was made to go far, and a used one should be looked at with that in mind. Check the standing rigging and chainplates, since a boat built for ocean passages may have sailed many thousands of miles. The raised helm and bright saloon are part of the appeal, so look for crazing and leaks around hatches and ports. Light, ventilation and storage were key aims of the design, and a well kept boat still shows that.
