Hake Yachts was founded in 1973 by Nick Hake, according to Sail magazine, and is based in Stuart, Florida. Its sailboats carry the Seaward name. Many of them add RK, short for retractable keel: the Seaward 32 RK is described as a trailerable coastal cruiser whose keel lifts to give a very shallow draft, while the lowered keel with its lead bulb makes it fit for coastal passages and the odd offshore hop.
Our model records list six Seaward designs, four sailing yachts and two sailing boats. The early Seaward 23 (7.47 metres) and Seaward 25 (8.15 metres) run from 1990 to 2000. The Seaward Fox at 5.28 metres spans 1990 to 2018, the longest run in the range. The RK line opens in 2006 with the 32 RK (10.58 metres, to 2021), followed in 2010 by the 26 RK (8.66 metres, to 2022) and the 46 RK (14.63 metres, to 2018).
A lifting keel changes how a boat is used. Shallow bays, beaches and creeks become anchorages, and the trailer turns a weekend into a road trip to new water. The keel box and lifting gear deserve a look every season, and the smaller Seawards are happiest stored ashore on their trailer, ready to go.
