IDB Marine; cover, cost and conditions
IDB Marine is a yard in Trégunc, Brittany, building fast cruising sailboats in two families, Malango and Mojito. Pierre Rolland drew the Malango 888, whose hull has two chines that add form stability and power, plus a lifting keel with a draught of 1.00 to 2.30 metres. Construction uses resin infusion to keep weight down. The Mojito 888 shares that hull but adds a raised coachroof with all round windows for a wide view from inside. Names such as 888 or 1088 give the length in centimetres, more or less.
Our records list ten IDB Marine models, seven sailing yachts and three sailboats. The Malango family has four members (888, 999, 1045 and 1088), the Mojito family five (650, 888, 1088, the Virgin Mojito 888 and the Mojito 32, the only name in feet), and the Maxi 650 completes the list. Lengths run from 6.5 metres for the Maxi 650 and Mojito 650 to 11 metres for the Malango 1088 and Mojito 1088. The first build years are 2009 for the Malango 888 and 1045, the Mojito 32 joined in 2022, and six models run into the latest build years.
A lifting keel opens up shallow anchorages and drying harbours, but its case, pin and lifting gear need a check each season. The 6.5 metre boats tow behind a car and launch from a ramp; the larger yachts sit on a marina berth and are sailed short handed along the coast. The light infused hulls reward clean bottoms and good sails.
