Irwin Yacht and Marine; cover, cost and conditions
Irwin Yacht and Marine, usually just Irwin Yachts, was an American yard in St. Petersburg, Florida, founded in 1966 by Ted Irwin. Irwin designed the boats himself and built sailing yachts in fibreglass, with a strong focus on cruisers, many of them for the Caribbean charter trade. You can spot an Irwin by its roomy cruising layout and by labels such as MK-II or MK-III for revised versions. Several models came as ketches, which splits the sail area of the big boats into easily handled pieces.
Our records list eight Irwins, all sailing yachts: the 32.5, 34, 38 MK-II, 43 MK-III, 52, 54 Ketch, 68 and MK IV 37 Ketch. The MK IV 37 Ketch comes first, from 1969, followed by the 32.5 in 1970 and the 52 in 1973. The latest runs end in 1995 for the 38 MK-II and the 68 and in 1996 for the 43 MK-III. Lengths go from 9.91 metres for the 32.5 to 22 metres for the 68, with the 34 at 10.57, the 37 Ketch at 11.45, the 38 at 12, the 43 at 13.6, the 52 at 16.7 and the 54 Ketch at 17 metres.
Many Irwins have a past in charter fleets or on long passages, and a survey should look at chainplates, deck core around fittings and the age of standing rigging. The larger ketches need a deep berth and a crew that is comfortable with two masts. Plenty of owners have added solar panels, a watermaker or a wind generator, which makes them well suited to life at anchor.
