Island Packet builds cruising sailing yachts in Florida, at Largo on the Gulf coast. The naval architect Bob Johnson founded the house in 1979 and draws the boats himself; the first model, a twenty six footer, came in 1980. The underbody is the signature: a long shallow keel shaped as a foil, with the lead ballast fully encapsulated inside it. That gives shoal draught with a great deal of lateral area. You recognise the yachts by the cream topsides, the very high freeboard and the wide boxy deckhouse.
Our model records list 39 Island Packet models: 32 sailing yachts, three motor yachts, two motorsailers and two motorboats. Recorded build years begin in the late seventies and run into current production. Thirty nine series are recorded: the early 27, 29, 32, 35, 38 and 40; the three figure 349, 360, 370, 379, 439, 460, 465, 490, 495, 520 and 525; the SP Cruiser Mark II; the Blue Jacket 40; the 42 Motor Sailer; the Estero; and the North Star 44. Lengths run from 7.3 to 15.9 metres, half the models between 11.1 and 13.9 metres.
The keel is the interesting part of these boats. Because the ballast is encapsulated rather than bolted on, there is no keel joint to open in a grounding, but the load goes straight into the hull shell instead. Shoal draught with plenty of lateral area is a rare combination and it is the reason these yachts turn up in places deeper boats cannot reach.
