Worth knowing
Itchen Ferry; cover, cost and conditions
The name Itchen Ferry belongs to a working boat of the Solent. Small gaff cutters of that name fished the waters off Southampton and took their name from the hamlet of Itchen Ferry on the river of the same name. A handful of the old fishing boats still sail, among them Nellie, Wonder and Fanny of Cowes. In the seventies Drummond Bayne (Marine) Ltd in Southampton took the hull form and turned it into cruising yachts of about 22 and 25 feet, also sold as Itchen Ferries. For the 25-footer G. Drummond-Bayne supplied the hulls, while Peter Webster Ltd later handled the fitting out. The long keel and sturdy, traditional hull give away its working-boat ancestry.
Our model records hold one design: the Itchen Ferry 25, entered as a sailing yacht of 7.62 metres. The recorded build years run from 1974 to 1982, while the reference source places the start of building in 1973. No entry reaches the most recent build years, so these boats are now between roughly forty and fifty years old. The smaller sister of about 22 feet does not appear separately. An Itchen Ferry in our records is therefore a clearly defined yacht: a long-keeler of around seven and a half metres, built over a short period in southern England.
A long keel makes for a boat that holds its course and sits upright on a drying mooring, which suits the tidal creeks it was born in. On a fifty-year-old example the keel bolts or ballast attachment, the rudder hangings and the condition of the deck joint deserve a close look. Check the age of the standing rigging and the state of the engine bed, since many boats have been re-engined over the years. Survivors that have been sailed regularly and kept dry below often age better than boats that sat neglected on a mooring.
