J Composite; cover, cost and conditions
J Composites is based in Les Sables d'Olonne, in the Vendée on France's Atlantic coast. Since December 1994 the yard has built sailing yachts for the American J/Boats company under licence, a link that began when founder Didier Le Moal met Jeff Johnstone, son of the J/Boats founder, at a regatta. Hulls are laid up as sandwich structures using resin infusion, and the joinery shop and design office are part of the same operation. The current range includes the J/7 daysailer, the J/36, J/40 and J/45 cruisers and the J/70 and J/99 sportsboats. Spotting one is easy: a J and a slash in front of the number, and a flat, fast hull with a generous cockpit.
Our model records hold two boats under this name. The J/11S is a 10.9 metre sailing yacht, listed from 2012 to 2019. Alan Johnstone drew it as the sport version, with a deeper bulb keel, a taller rig and twin rudders. The J/22 is a 6.86 metre keelboat, listed from 1997 to 2008. Rod Johnstone designed it back in 1983, and it still races as a one design class today. Both lines are closed in our records, so the newest boats carry a 2019 build year and the oldest go back to 1997.
Sandwich hulls are light and stiff, but they reward a careful look before purchase. Moisture readings around deck fittings, the keel bolts and the rudder bearings show whether water has found its way into the core. On a J/11S the twin rudders and the bulb keel deserve close attention after a racing career, since hard groundings leave traces in the keel sump. A used J/22 is often a club racer, so ask about its regatta history, the age of the sails and the condition of the mast step. These boats are at home on lakes, in coastal waters and on the regatta circuits of the North Sea, the Baltic and the Atlantic coast.

Series by J Composite, build years and cover
J - 11S is a sailing yacht from J Composite, built from 2012 to 2019.
J - 22 is a sailing boat from J Composite, built from 1997 to 2008.
For the J - 11S and J - 22 by J Composite series the market value and the replacement cost often
differ widely.
An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
For the J - 11S by J Composite series:
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:
a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,
and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
For the J - 22 by J Composite series: On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides.
A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
